Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin – 1956 *

Synopsis: A young American man (David) living in France is struggling with his sexuality. He had just proposed his girlfriend Hella before she went to Spain. Through an old gay friend Jacques, David meets Italian Giovanni, who works in a gay bar in Paris . David and Giovanni soon begin an affair that causes David a lot of grief, he doesn’t want to admit his feelings. In attempts to prove to himself that he is not homosexual, he has a one night stand with Sue but he feels nothing towards her and does not intend to see her again. Following an incident, Giovanni is sentence to death, in the moments leading to his execution David  becomes truly remorseful. With Hella’s return comes further realisation that David prefers men to women, how will he let her know there is no future for the two of them?
